The Albuquerque Baseball Academy has awarded the 2009 Daniel “Jeff” Lucero Memorial Scholarship to Mervin Martinez.
Mervin is a 2009 graduate of Rio Grande High School. Mervin, an All Metro outfielder, and selected to play in the North/South, had his senior season cut short, by a season ending injury, when he collided with a teammate and broke his leg. Currently, Mervin is a freshman at New Mexico Highlands University, where he was recruited, by Steve Jones (head baseball coach), to play baseball.
Jeff Lucero graduated from Valley HS in 2007. Jeff, an All-State catcher and pitcher, was tragically killed in an automobile accident in December of 2008. Jeff turned downed a pitching scholarship from the University of New Mexico to pursue his catching career at Eastern Arizona JC and then transferred to New Mexico Junior College, in 2008, for his sophomore season. Jeff had Tommy John surgery and was on a medical redshirt at the time of the accident.
The “Jeff” Lucero Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a local graduating high school baseball player who best exemplifies the qualities of Jeff, in regards to character, academic performance, demonstrated leadership, passion for baseball and will be moving on to play college baseball.
In conjunction with Chad Kuhn (Valley HS head baseball coach), the Albuquerque Baseball Academy raises money to fund the annual scholarship through donations and by selling baseball jerseys, bats and balls autographed by former and current major league baseball players.
